HOW FLAME RESISTANT FABRICS WORK
Normal work apparel will ignite and continue to burn if exposed to an ignition source such as flame or electric arc. Everyday fabrics will continue to burn until they are extinguished or all flammable material is consumed

Flame-resistant (FR) fabrics and garments are intended to resist ignition, prevent the spread of flames away from the immediate area of high heat impingement, and to self-extinguish almost immediately upon removal of the ignition source.

Bulwark's FR protective work apparel is secondary protective clothing, which is designed for continuous wear in designated areas where intermittent exposure to flame or heat is possible. It is to be used in conjunction with primary protective clothing for activities where significant exposure to flame or heat is likely, such as molten substance splash.

  • Inherently FR Fibers Inherently flame-resistant fibers are defined as having flame-resistance as an essential characteristic of the fiber, such as Nomex

  • Treated Fabrics Treated fabrics are treated with a flame retardant chemical to make them flame-resisant. The fibers used in these fabrics, such as cotton, are not normally considered protective and become flame-resistant because of the treatment.

  • Treated Fibers Fabrics made from treated synthetic fibers, which are extruded with a flame retardant chemical in the fiber-forming process, become flame-resistant for the life of the garment because the flame retardant cannot be removed by wear of laundering.

  • Blends Some fabrics are blends of treated and inherently FR fibers.

 


EXCEL-FR®

All Excel-FR® cotton apparel is permanently treated to guarantee flame resistance for the life of the garment.


 

EXCEL-FR® COMFORTOUCH®


COTTON’S COMFORT. NYLON’S DURABILITY. This practical 88% cotton / 12% nylon blend provides long-lasting protection for nearly all work environments. Ideal applications include ferrous metals, electrical utilities and the chemical, oil, gas and petrochemical industries. Every Excel-FR® ComforTouch® garment is engineered for life-of-the-garment flame resistance.



NOMEX® IIIA


LIGHTWEIGHT. BREATHABLE. INHERENTLY FLAME RESISTANT. DuPont Nomex® IIIA garments are extremely durable, so they aren’t damaged by laundering. Nomex® IIIA apparel is preferred by workers in petrochemical and refinery environments, and makes a great choice for electric and gas utility workers.


 

NOMEX BLEND COOL TOUCH®


ULTRA-LIGHTWEIGHT. WICKABLE. BLENDED NOMEX®. Cool Touch® garments provide flame-resistant protection in a lightweight Nomex® / Lenzing blended fabric. The result – unbeatable softness coupled with lasting durability.




FIREWEAR®

COMBED COTTON. INHERENTLY FLAME RESISTANT. Firewear® is a top contender for petrochemical workers, utility workers and firefighters. Our Fibrous Flame Retardant Fiber (FFR) is inherently flame resistant and selfextinguishing. FR properties are permanent, and will not be damaged through repeated laundering.


 

FR HI-VISIBILITY


FLAME-RESISTANT. COMFORTABLE. COMPLIANT. Bulwark® offers garments designed to provide additional wearer safety during periods of limited visibility, or in the often complex and varying backgrounds found in many occupations such as traffic control, construction, utility work along roadways and equipment operation.




MOLTEN METAL PROTECTION


SHED MOLTEN ALUMINUM. CAST OFF CRYOLITE. Because of its unique ability to shed molten aluminum as well as cryolite, specialized Molten Metal Protection garments are used extensively throughout the aluminum casting industry. Our products are inherently flame resistant, so their ability to protect will never be compromised by laundering.


 

FR DISPOSABLES


PROTECT OTHER GARMENTS. PREVENT CONTAMINANT SOILING. Extend® FR garments are water repellent, made to withstand minor splashes without saturation to garments underneath. Use them to extend the life of more expensive thermal protection, or to provide coverage and protection for temporary visitors.
